about

There’s not a vast amount I can write about the original Pareidolia tracks as they were. For some reason I’d become a bit estranged from them compared to, say, Orgonon, Shadow at The Gate or Harmonics in The Silence. The general feel of the collection seems a bit different too and not in a way I can easily explain. In any case when I came to re-listen prior to starting remixes I found myself wearing an increasingly glum expression, along the lines of “buggering hell this is going to need some work this is”. In ways far, far too numerous to mention! In short, it’s still about clarifying, defining/redefining, compacting down and hoping for a decent outcome, same as with any work. I think, if anything I felt that perhaps the original mixes didn’t sound matured enough and I came across several instances where it looks like I was planning further work but had decided things were okay as they were. Hmmm…

Right then, in considering releasing in the “Great Out There”, as opposed to just Bandcamp, I really need to be reducing things to double album length if at all possible. I guess the tracks don’t need segues either but sod that for a lark, I luvs me my segues so I does! I really pleased with these reduxes though. I’d already remixed each track from ground up before editing them down. The new mixes were done on headphones, mainly because after using these Audio-Technica cans some years I find I easily prefer the clarity and balanced low end I can achieve on them. My speakers are.. in a red brick garage, say no more. Pareidolia needed more clarity and a darn good dredging of the mud along the bottom! A change of, and addition in some cases, of decent reverb. In a lot of cases individual tracks needed better compression. Everything needed better EQ. After that the bounced tracks would go through my mastering strip and get edited down to around 10mins apiece.

On hearing the outcome on various playback media, I noticed I’d got just about the right amount of bass, a good deal of clarity and a good brash hit on the ears on loud playback. Yeah okay I thought.. I’ll go with that, at least it ain’t smiley-face EQ :-)

So, once I’ve done the general release uploading I imagine they’ll release it about a month after I release it on here. It’s The Orchard now - it’s still called AWAL but it’s part of The Orchard inc. now. Well isn’t that nice. I have no idea what it means once it’s all out there, but it’s nice watching that tiny trickle of income as it never turns into a flood. It’s quite hypnotic.
