about

Like Psymanteum, Harmonics in The Silence (orig. 2016) has become another of my personal favourites over time. It's one where the whole feel of the thing was sufficiently unique to make me keep going back to listen.

Now, initially, HiTS was processed using Ambisonics in an attempt to make it sound Binaural/3D like with Dolby Atmos. I didn't particularly like the results so I mixed it without the psychoacoustics. Along comes Atmos, which although it doesn't entirely convince me on the 3D front (unless you're using surround anyway), it certainly does expand the sound field, enables each component to sound distinct and is perfectly made for 24bit definition. Especially good on headphones :-)

You can get apps which convert stereo into Atmos now. I imagine they sound okay, but my own system is likely a good deal more complex and tweakable. Apparently there are also Atmos reverb plugins popping up now. About as useful as putting a submarine into orbit and calling it a space station.

Anyway, it's a lovely 2hr 20min album to chill out to, except it may sound a bit bigger and clearer now.
