about

The learning curve for Dolby Atmos hasn't been, still isn't, the easiest thing to grasp, especially as once you're in it, it turns out there are many ways to get a result. Many ways to get an average result that is. Getting a great result has been a long process of trial and error. Well, one way I expected would turn out badly actually produced the best result by far. This was to split the stereo album into 5 frequency bands and pan those all around the virtual Atmos space. The recombined result not only sounds excellent, but it makes a very expansive and immersive experience even on decent stereo speakers. On headphones it's mind-blowingly immersive and, most of all, it's clear and crisp sounding. What happens when I bounce the track down to binaural stereo is that the 3D hemisphere gets processed internally as 7.1.2 before being folded down to the binaural stereo. It's possible to create an mp4 file which has been folded down to 5.1, except getting that to play on anything is a pretty hopeless endeavour. Everyone has headphones, decent stereo or home theatre setups though, making the universal binaural file by far the best way to deliver the result.
Enjoy being immersed!
