about

Psymanteum was produced very differently from the usual process right from the offset. It was all laid down as a single session i.e. it's really one long piece and, as such it consists of twelve stems. I have placed them all into Atmos as virtual objects, meaning the album has been actually mixed in Atmos, all objects panned widely. The ambience track randomly pans up/down, front/rear, throughout the album. Hence this is a true Dolby Atmos mix, not a remaster.

The music itself keeps growing on me I must say. I do like listening back to my own stuff and feeling like it was a job well done. And to tell the truth I don't get that 100% of the time. Some of my stuff doesn't impress me when listening after several years. Some definitely does and this is one of those. It's just cos it's different, atmospheric and dreamlike, with a flowing quality which really works for it.

The Atmos on this works brilliantly to reveal a crisp, well-defined sound with a very solid low end. There's little to no post-mastering bar from low/high end frequency shelving. Each stem has independent compression on it, providing some degree of control. But it doesn't need so much. So you can expect great dynamics and a vast immersive sound field.

The 2 halves @ 24bit are the best way I can present the album for immersive listening without loss to the Atmos mix. Dolby is known not to like 16 bit for Atmos use. It sounds fine to my ears -but- I can actually hear a difference between the 16 and 24 bit files. There's a lot of data in them thar files!

I won't bother pasting the original write-up. I do try to keep to just 2 coffees these days :-)
